Interview
The 4-H interview process will be conducted as a team interview.
Teams of three professionals will interview each applicant
individually. The interviewers will be business professionals,
university faculty, 4-H Alumni and community leaders.
Although interviewers will be provided a copy of the application and
resume for each applicant, they will not score either. Their task
is to determine the interview scores, which counts 50%.
Format for the Interview
1. 4-H member enters room, introduces him/herself to
each interviewer and sits in the chair.
2. Each 4-H’er will make a one (1) minute opening
statement about him/herself.
3. Using the opening statements made by the 4-H’er,
interviewers will begin to probe the 4-H experience.
Sample questions: - What is the most significant
accomplishment you have experienced in 4-H?
- If you had an opportunity to change your 4-H experience, how would
you make the change?
- What role has 4-H played in your future plans?
4. Interviewers will also probe to determine the
young person’s ability to discuss current events.
Sample questions: - What current event has the most
impact upon youth?
- If you have an opportunity to speak to politicians, what youth issues
would you discuss and why?
- What local issues face your community and how would you solve them?
5. Interviewers will be interested in the 4-H
member’s future career goals, college plans, and etc.
6. Each 4-H member will be given the opportunity to
make closing remarks and to thanks the interviewers for their time.
SAMPLE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
The Interview Questions will be divided up into 3 different
topics.
- Current Events
- Youth Issues
- 4-H Related
1. How can you use your 4-H experience to help encourage more
children to participate in activities to better their community?
2. Have you done any community service projects this year?
If so, please share the outcome of your experience.
3. Share some of your most memorable 4-H experiences.
4. If you are selected to attend National 4-H Congress, how
do you plan to use the knowledge you gained in your county, district,
and state?
5. Why should we (judges) select you for one of these
National trips?
6. What suggestions do you have to encourage students to think
more positively rather than following the crowd who may be misleading.
7. What can the school system do to prevent students from
bringing weapons to school aside from using metal detectors?
8. Share some of the 4-H activities you have participated in on
the state level. Which experience did you enjoy the most and why?
9. How can you get more young people involved with community
issues?
10. What are your goals in life? (career, personal, etc)
11. Has your 4-H experience had an impact on your life that would
not have occurred without 4-H? If yes, why?
12. The Governor has chosen you to accompany him to the National
Governor’s conference to speak on concerns of the youth in our
state. What concerns would you share?
13. What form of punishment would you recommend for students with
behavior problems in school?
14. If chosen to go on a volunteer mission to another country,
what country would you choose and describe it. What volunteer
work would you do based on the needs of the country?
15. What skills have you achieved through 4-H which can help you
in the future?
16. How would your friend, teacher, agent describe you?
17. 4-H has given you money to spend on youth programs, how would you
spend this money?
18. If you could be the State 4-H Leader for one day, what would
you do in that first day and what would you change?
19. What are your strengths and weakness'?
