One valuable resource available in many communities is the Toastmasters International, a public organization that gives individuals the chance to hone speaking skills in a supportive group atmosphere. Clubs usually meet weekly. Toastmasters clubs are often happy to sponsor public-speaking workshops for interested young people. Some clubs also sponsor and organize Junior Toastmasters Clubs. The organization can be very beneficial to you and the youth you are helping. To locate a club near you, check the organization's Web site at www.toastmasters.org, or ask your chamber of commerce for the name of a nearby club. Some youths may want to participate in speech contests. Schools, community organizations, and 4-H programs have competitive public-speaking events. Check with the sponsoring group for more details.
The Power Language Series
Power Language is a public-speaking curriculum with consecutive products for three different age groups. An individual may use the series in cooperation with an adult helper. However, since public speaking requires an audience, it is helpful to find supportive groups of people with whom the young person may practice skills.
The series begins with a fact sheet entitled Show and Tell for ages 5 to 8. The second level is an activity guide for ages 9 to 12. The third level is an activity guide for ages 13 to 19. The series also includes this Helper's Guide with tips and background information as well as several activities designed for group participation.
