Project Skill

  • Giving a presentation

Objective

  • Participants will give a presentation that teaches the audience how to do something.

Success Indicator

  • Participant gives an organized 5- to 10-minute presentation that gives audience members the knowledge they need to perform the task.

Message Makers

  • Props and visual aids necessary for presentation

Wise Words

  • Meaningful repetition is important in oral messages. In a written message, the audience can reread parts they don't understand. In a speech, it helps to emphasize a message by repeating it in a slightly different way.

Power Language: Public Speaking

Activity 5: “How-To“ Speech

Set the Stage

Most everybody has a talent or skill they can share with someone else. Just as someone taught you how to do something, you can teach another. But imagine showing several people at once!

Speak Out

Think of something you can do that you'd like to show others. It might be a craft project, a type of repair, or a favorite recipe. Write a speech that explains the procedure to others. Decide what would be a logical way to arrange your speech. Expert speakers suggest that you remember always to tell-tell-tell: Start by telling your audience what you're going to tell them; next, tell them; then, tell them what you told them. Also make sure that the group you're talking to can clearly see any props you use.

Stretch the Message

Have someone in your audience try to do or repeat the task you've just presented. Did they have all the information necessary to accomplish it? How can you improve your presentation based on this feedback?
