Activity 8: Career Talk
Set the Stage
You can apply much of the know-how you've gained in public speaking to important endeavors, such as interviewing for jobs or college. The skills you've practiced, including introducing yourself, speaking spontaneously, and answering questions, are invaluable to your future.
Speak Out
Find a partner for practicing a mock job interview. Each of you will take a turn being the employer and the job applicant. Make a list of questions you will ask as the employer. As the job applicant, prepare a list of your skills and attributes that will make you a desirable employee.
Stretch the Message
Do the exercise again, this time choosing a completely different type of job. For example, instead of an office job, pretend that you are applying for one that requires working outdoors (such as on a farm or at a camp), or working among crowds (educator or entertainer), or dealing with the public (sales clerk or waiter). How do you package and describe your skills differently, depending on the type of job you're seeking?
